Genealogy Home A note about how Norwegians got their names

Ancestors of Bjorn Golberg While doing the research on "our" Kirkebergs, I found an interesting family tree that included Bjorn Golberg and took the line all the way back to the year 250 in Norway. ("Jorenby/Jorandby Family History" by Charles Jorenby in ancestry.com's Ancestry World Tree.) I have no idea how correct this information is, as there are no sources listed in the file. But I have included it here just because it's interesting and rather fun to look at these names and dates of the Vikings they must have been. It goes back 39 generations and includes names such as:
No authenticity guaranteed. If you look at this link, you can follow the kings of Norway in an interesting series on Wikipedia (taken from the public domain source, The Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition). Perhaps the most telling statement is the one by Claus Krag, a norwegian historian:
(from Wikipedia on the Fairhair Dynasty.) So, remember that as you look at the list of "ancestors" below. For example, the second generation is rather suspiciously full of Unknowns... No, I don't believe we are descended from the kings of Norway. Or ... You know... who knows? Maybe every Norwegian is. Whatever the case may be, I just think it's greatly interesting to look at these old names going back all the way to the third century and imagine the times as they might have been in Norway - the societies in which they lived - the voyages they may have taken - raping and pillaging over the waters during the reign of the Norsemen / Vikings. It's fun. 'Tis the stuff of which legends are spun - Norse legends - Norse mythology.
