For details about Ingrid and
Paul, see A Patchwork of Memories. Here are a
few more memories written (after Patchwork) by Irma to her sister, Honey, in
letters over a period of time:
March 11, 1992, Irma to Honey:
"My Dear Sister, ...This morning I am reminiscing about our quiet
beginning in a little prairie town in Montana. I have a photo of the
house in Minot where you and I were born. But we moved shortly
thereafter to Old Scobey, then later to new Scobey, and the Homestead. I
find myself thinking back to our days on the farm. It seemed idyllic at
the time, as we were growing up and exploring the hills and valleys. We
used to walk up to the top of the hill to meet our father in his horse
drawn buggy when he returned from his law office in Scobey. And we used
to go down for a swim in the river when Taylor was in diapers. And
Mother would take a dip in her house dress. Billy was always
constructing something. I remember ~ once he and I were sitting on some
rocks eating prunes and he would crack open the prune pits and he would
first,
'suck out the salt,' he said, before giving me my small nut to eat. It
wasn't until
much later that I found the sweet juice in the pit. Billy always had some
dry
crusts of bread in his pockets and he would share that with me. It
seemed we always were looking for something to eat.
"Do you remember how you and I used to go over the hill to the south, and
play with the neighbor's children. We gathered stones and outlined the
rooms of our supposed house and used broken shards of dishes we found in
an abandoned cellar on the way to the prairie back of Molly Pittingers
place.
The cousins from Indiana were there for the summer and there had to be a
piano in the living room. One of the older girls was going to bring some
piano
keys. She never did, but the make believe kept us busy and having fun.
"It seemed we were always looking for something to eat at home and once I
found a good slice of onion, and I put that in my mouth and kept it there
the whole morning while we played the "stone-house on the prairie."
"Do you remember when Aunt Lily was there one winter. She was a great
cookie baker, and always had oatmeal cookies in the top drawers of the
kitchen cabinet.
"Yes, I think you too, were probably always looking for something to eat,
or to put in your mouth, like the tin ... you swallowed and mom
had the remedy for that ~ bread and milk, and lots of it, and you came
through unscathed. There was something else ~ some kind of poison ~ and for
that she gave you raw eggs to make you vomit. Those country remedies
really worked."
April 21, 1992, Irma to Honey:
"Yes ~ the 'crik' ~ Mom used to put on a house dress and immerse herself in
the cool waters of the Creek ~ that was the way she took her bath in the
summer.
"Do you remember the time we all ~ that is ~ you and I and Billy ~ I'm not
sure
if Taylor was with us yet ~ were taken in the buggy by our mother to visit
one evening at a neighbor's home across the Valley to the East. We spent
the evening there, and I remember a gas lamp. Before it was lit, I had
to reach up and pinch the fragile bag, thereby destroying it. But the
kind lady simply attached another mesh bag and lit it, thereby lighting
up the room The bag turned gray after the lamp was extinguished and
would collapse if touched. We had a pleasant evening there, and I
remember crossing a brook on a narrow plank bridge ~ walking very
carefully! And when we returned home, our father was still not there!
The cannon in our back yard was very useful for jumping over. I wouldn't
try that today!"
